Woman of the Week : Barbara Yolles-Hill

Barbara Yolles-Hill is the founder of A Little Something Extra, a company making gift baskets of personalized, custom chocolates.

Until recently, she didn't even realize she wanted to be an entrepreneur. It was only after feeling a need for, well, a little something extra that Barbara turned it into a business.

After moving from New York to Florida as a teenager with her family, Barbara studied graphics in school. She spent almost 25 rewarding years in the industry. But something was missing. The problem wasn't boredom or too much free time. As a single mother with two teen boys, three dogs, a cat and a full-time job as a production supervisor for multi-million dollar catalog company, Barbara's plate was pretty full.

She still needed an outlet for her creative side. Something fun. Something rewarding - personally and financially. That's when Barbara came up with A Little Something Extra.

The idea is both sweet and simple. She starts with crowd-pleasing classic Hershey® bars and dresses them in wrappers customized to match an event's theme. Decorations can include corporate logos, graphics, personal inscriptions and even a rhinestone for extra special sparkle. Beautifully wrapped baskets of the custom bars are perfect gifts for anything from intimate parties to large corporate training events.

The best part is that Barbara's baskets aren't just products. They're creations she enjoys making and her clients really enjoy giving.

You can see samples of A Little Something Extra's custom baskets and chocolate on Facebook - just search for her name. Contact Barbara at 954-829-8862 or ALittleSomethingExtra@comcast.net to make your gathering a little more special.

Long Term Care Insurance

Long Term Care Insurance:
What you should know to make the best choices.
By SUSAN L. AMES CLU, ChFC

Why should you consider long term care insurance?
70% of people over age 65 will require long term care during their life time. The average annual cost of a private nursing home room in 2008 hit $76,285 according to the Department of Health and Human Services. With a 3% inflation rate, this means the same room will cost close to $130,0.00/year by 2030. With the average stay in a nursing home being 2.5 years, the total cost would come to $37.5,000 by 2030.

Who should buy long term care insurance?
Healthy people with net assets of $500,0.00 to $2,00.0,000. Above that level, you may want to self-insure. The best time to buy long term care insurance is when you are in your late 50's or early 60's. It makes sense to purchase long term care insurance if you have a family history of health issues that lead to dementia, Alzheimer's, diabetes or a long life span.

Who should not buy long term care insurance?
You currently receive or may soon receive Medicaid benefits.
You have limited assets and can't afford the premiums over the lifetime of your policy. Your only source of income is a social security benefit or supplemental security income.

How do you select an insurance company?
When selecting an insurance company check the company's rating by one of the rating services: A.M. Best, Fitch, Standard & Poor's, Duff & Phelps, Moody's or Weiss. Consider the company's reputation, claims paying history and commitment to the long-term care market. A company that has sold a lot of long term care health insurance policies has a larger risk pool, thus reducing the threat of large premium increases in the future.

What services should your policy cover?
Your Long Term Care Health Insurance should cover home health care, assisted living facilities, hospice care (either at home or in a facility), adult day care, nursing home care along with additional benefits such as caregiver training of a friend or relative, equipment and home modification such as ramps, stair lifts and grab bars.

The level of coverage falls into three categories:
Skilled Care includes nursing care, physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapy or rehabilitation performed by licensed professionals.

Intermediate Care occurs when a person receives nursing care or rehabilitation on a regular basis but not full-time.

Custodian Care is not medical care and includes assistance with activities of daily living i.e. personal hygiene, simple health care tasks, managing medications and homemaker services such as meals, laundry and light housekeeping performed by home health aides and personal care attendants.

The insurance policy should not require having skilled care before paying for custodian care.

Do What It Takes!

It takes a lot of courage to start your own business. To have a successful business - to stay in for the long term -you need more than courage. Owning a small business takes a mixture of determination, self motivation, and hard work.

Determination: Do you love what you do? Do you have a burning desire to turn what you love into a successful business? Or do you continually have doubts? It's okay to doubt yourself from time to time. Running your own business has its difficulties. Ultimately, you must have the courage to rise above those doubts and do what it takes.

Self Motivation: Owning your own business means that you will be the one making the decisions and leading your company in the right direction. You need to be the one to generate the energy and enthusiasm. You are responsible for all aspects of your business, from marketing your goods or services, to bookkeeping, and everything in-between. If you are not disciplined, if you don't do the work, the work doesn't get done.

Hard Work: Are you willing to work long hours to keep your business on track? Sometimes you will need to make sacrifices of your time to reach long-term rewards. You will need to get out of your comfort zone on many occasions. Are you willing to explore new ways of doing things and learn unfamiliar topics?

You don't need to be born an entrepreneur. Anyone who has the desire and is willing to learn can function like one. Many successful entrepreneurs have similar characteristics. Some traits that seem to be basic to successful business owners are:

Vision
Tolerance for failure
Strong management and organizational skills
Strong integrity/Highly reliable
Strong drive to achieve
Problem solving skills
Personal initiative
Persistence
Independent
Goal-oriented behavior
Creative
Commitment
Calculated risk taker

After pondering these characteristics, are there some that don't describe you? These may be areas of weakness that you can work on. If many of these characteristics do depict you, chances are you have the makings of a successful entrepreneur.

Don't Stop Believing!

Can you really attract what you want into your life? As the George Michael song said, "You Gotta Have Faith". If you believe, and then diligently work towards creating new realities in your life, there is a very good chance that the Law of Attraction will help you obtain what you desire. And, in the process you will get a natural high from knowing that you have followed through with faith and endurance in order to get what you want.

There's an old saying "you are your own worst enemy". That is true for many people who end up sabotaging themselves without even realizing what they are doing.

They don't realize that they have the means and the power to get what they want. The most important factor in using the Law of Attraction is controlling your thoughts and taking responsibility. Then you can select the type of experiences you want to appear in your life.

The way you react and respond to whatever is going on around you will really make a difference in motivating you to work toward your dreams and purpose. You have to really know what you want before the Law of Attraction can start to work. Then focus your thoughts on what you genuinely desire and imagine that you have already received it.

I'm sure many of you have already seen the Secret movie, but there is also another really interesting and intriguing movie out there called "What the Bleep Do We Know". This movie, in which science and spirituality come together, deals with the question of why we keep creating the same realities in our lives.

We may really try to follow the rules of the Law of attraction and tell ourselves that we are going to attain something that we really desire, but deep down we may be thinking that it's really not going to happen. We need to clear old beliefs and ideas that may be preventing our approach to true happiness.

The following paragraph was written by Wallace D. Wattles, who was actually the inspiration for the book, the Secret - "The creative power within us makes us into the image of that to which we give our attention. We are Thinking Substance and thinking substance always takes the form of that which it thinks about. The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best, therefore it tends to become the best, and it takes the form or character of the best, and will receive the best".

So, the best is yet to come. It takes some work and perseverance to reap the benefits that the Law of Attraction can bring you. When you are driving your car, you have to keep your foot on the gas in order for the car to move. The same thing applies with using the Law of Attraction. If you give up too soon, you will never know the satisfaction of realizing the attainment of all of your dreams.
